The conference theme for this year is the “Ebbs and Flows of the Eighteenth-Century and Eighteenth-Century Studies.” This theme not only considers the maritime and the aquatic, but also the contact zones in which environmental or social bodies meet and collide, including coasts, rivers, and the delineation of boundaries—geographic, political, and personal. In a metaphoric register, “ebbs and flows” delineates an understanding of the rise and fall of trends, patterns, belief systems, ideologies, and social values. This understanding, within both the aquatic and social contexts, includes a recognition of how mainstream trends belie the often messy and sometimes violent countertrends, delays, drags and outliers.
Centering the field of eighteenth-century studies within this theme, the conference welcomes papers that consider best practices, trends in the fields, the use and reuse of materials, and interdisciplinary approaches that challenge and expand the boundaries of traditional perspectives.
